Riiva Morvayn, also known as Riiva the Magribash, Magistrix Morvayn, and Riiva Raelissun-Morvayn, is a rare book dealer affiliated with the Undaunted. She is known to be a consummate scholar and thief, seeking knowledge at any cost. The Mage’s Guild and House Telvanni have warrants out for her death or capture, and they should be contacted if she is spotted.

Her explanations for her backstory are confusing and often conflicting, but she was likely born in either Vvardenfell or the Imperial City, and spent time in both places during her developmental years. Her career and earliest known written works date back to 2E 547, published by the Imperial City Mage’s Guild. Her research topics while in the Guild tended toward the more esoteric, such as soul gem properties and how that relates to the anuic attenuation of the animus. She remains particularly interested in what makes a soul attune to one of the primal forces, and which one. In 2E 563, during the start of the Knahaten Flu hysteria, Riiva was expelled from the Mage’s Guild and a warrant for her arrest was posted on the grounds of necromancy and skooma manufacturing. She fled the city, and was next credibly spotted by an Imperial courier in Tel Mora four years later.

During the Planemeld, Riiva was involved in the evacuation of the Imperial City, and remained in the besieged capital for months studying the incursion. She joined the Undaunted during this period, and once openly used necromancy in the Elven Gardens district. After heroes stormed the White-Gold Tower and the Imperial City was only besieged by mortal armies, Morvayn retreated to Vvardenfell and published her research on the daedra.

Early Life

All of this information was collected second-hand and should be considered unreliable.

Morvayn’s early life is poorly understood, but she was likely born in either Vvardenfell or the Imperial City. Her parentage is disputed, although her mother Raelis was known in the Imperial Waterfront as an exile from Clan Erabenimsun of Molag Amur. Given her surname, her father was likely from Redoran’s House Morvayn. In her article Notes on The Book of Life and Death, Riiva’s stated position is that of someone raised with Velothi virtues. This conflicts with her criminal record in the Imperial City starting as a guttersnipe.

At the very least, it is known for certain that in 2E 544 Riiva Morvayn was granted entry to the Imperial Mage’s Guild as an apprentice. Her recommendation was paid for by Lady Clarissa Darkwalde, a Breton noble also attending classes in the capital. The two share many writing credits on each other’s research, and lived in the same townhome in the Elven Gardens District.

Eventually both mages received their mage’s staves and began independent research, with Clarissa shadowing in the Praxographical Center and Riiva the Mystic Archives. This is, by clearest estimation, likely when she learned the basics of necromancy. She also began to publish articles relating primarily to alchemy, mysticism, astrology, and theology. Her rapid workflow and intensely detailed research drew raised eyebrows, but Clarissa was on a similar track and the two seemed to have a competitive spirit that drove the other onwards. Unknown to their fellow researchers, the pair had embarked on a nearly two decade long moon sugar refinement operation while studying and working at the Guild.

The operation, by the time it was discovered during the paranoia of 2E 563’s Knahaten Flu epidemic, was quite extensive. The discovery and arrests included several prominent figures from across the Imperial City; Morvayn and Darkwalde among them. Duelist Vantus, gladiator and scion of the wealthy House Sintav, fled the city alongside Morvayn and Darkwalde. The trio escaped their holding cells in the Bastion sometime during the night and killed several guards during their flight.

The three fugitives seemed to find different paths after leaving Cyrodiil’s borders, as Riiva went dark for a few years. Lady Darkwalde was soon spotted in High Rock at her father’s side, while Sintav grew content as an outlaw in Abah’s Landing. Morvayn wasn’t spotted again until 2E 567, where it was discovered she had allied herself with House Telvanni. She ran into an Imperial Courier who recognised and reported her while working as a hireling in Tel Mora. Sightings remained sporadic as she was reported doing odd jobs around Vvardenfell for years, asking too many questions at every stop. Despite the damage to her reputation, several institutions and publishers still accepted her academic research and theoretical musings. Emboldened, she began to publish more fringe theories and ideas dangerously close to soul magic.

Artifacts

Witsplinter

See the UESP article for more detail here.

Witsplinter is a finely crafted elven blade with a wicked clip point. It was found in 2E 550 while the Mage’s Guild was exploring the depths of Atatar Haelia Dagon.

The enchantment splits the mind and dulls the senses, damaging magicka stores and leeching the victim’s wits. It was stolen by Riiva Morvayn during her trial and expulsion from the Guild in 2E 563.

Daedric Madstone

This Daedric Madstone was found by Riiva during the invasion of the Imperial City, pried out of a massive clanfear during an impromptu Mage’s Guild anatomy lesson.

The bezoar was tightly bound in enchanted netch leather, knotted with beads. Pressed tightly to a wound, it is rumoured to draw out any poison or disease. Morvayn tends to consider it her good luck charm, and keeps it on hand in case of any rogue alchemists.
